EVGA has been one of the best Graphics Card manufacturers to date. Thus no exceptions were made for NVidia’s latest Maxwell offering the GTX 970. You might be wondering, haven’t EVGA already make a GTX 970 SC? Well yes but there’s quite a difference. Well there’s an extra ‘S’…….. that and quite a few other changes were made addressing current owners of the SC, review forums and the general public.
Why the extra ‘S’?
The ‘S’ stands for Super. So it’s called the GTX 970 ‘Super’ Super Clocked because apparently EVGA didn’t think one super just wasn’t enough. Not only does the SSC have a higher clock speed than the SC, it has a 6 Phase power delivery, a Dual-Bios feature (one set to the default fan setting (Silent Mode) to start when Temps increase over 60°C and the other to keep the fan running at all times) and a new cooler.
The ACX 2.0+ Cooler
The SSC also features a completely redesigned cooler. The ACX 2.0+ cooler fixes a few problems on the SC’s ACX 2.0 cooler. The ACX 2.0 cooler had an extra heat pipe that did not touch the GPU rendering it useless, though not a big deal EVGA fixed the problem by using a copper plate which evenly dissipates the heat and uses straight copper heat pipes advertised by EVGA that they’re better for temperatures. The Cooler also features a metal plate to help cool the MOSFETS and VRAM. With the added cooling, you can achieve very high overclocks getting mine stable at 1,553 MHz without the temperatures rising above 70°C.
Benchmarks
NOTE: Overclock will NOT be the same on all cards

As you can see in the benchmarks this is card kills at 1080p gaming and is even better on 1440p (Highly recommended over 1080p). All benchmarks were run on Ultra Settings with Anti-Aliasing turned up to the max setting. The SSC while overclocked comes very close to the GTX 980 series of cards that gets around 39 to 40 FPS on 4k.
Spec Sheet
Is it worth it?
The GTX 970 SSC is similarly priced with other 970’s at Rs. 33,300 including taxes. The new cooler and the higher overclocking capabilities has taken the SSC a step ahead of the others and has truly set a mark for other GTX 970’s by already taking the spot of the fastest 970 on the market. I would have loved to see a back plate standard on there like the Gigabyte G1 Gaming and Asus Strix card’s do, not only for the looks but to also to cool 4 exposed VRAM’s on the back. Though A back plate is available for the GTX 970 SSC for Rs. 1300, it is optional. The GTX 970 is still the most Bang for your Buck card available to date. It has been a clear winner in NVidia’s Maxwell series of GPU’s topping the GTX 980 for its performance to price ratio.
